Kong Jie – New World Champion
15-17 December, Kong Jie and Qiu Jun plays in 14th final of Samsung Cup. Samsung Cup is sponsored by Korean Company, so it’s pity that no Korean play in the final. Last year Kong Jie also play in the final but lost to Lee Sedol 2-0.
In first game Qiu Jun took black stones and play new variation of Micro-Chinese Opening. When invade in button-right corner and made a life there than black situation wasn’t so optimistic. This approach to opening looks playable but it’s hard to said that it’s to black advantage.
In middle game black build moyo in center and game was pretty even, but Qiu Jun play few mistakes in endgame and Kong Jie easily won the game by 5,5 points after 272 moves.
In second game opening was pretty standard but also ended very quickly. Both sides fights like a hell on the right side. Fight was complex but when Kong Jie play black 133 is situation become favorable. After 157 moves Qiu Jun resigned.
Kong Jie won the title and become new World Champion. It’s big achievement, but real test will come next year, when he will met Lee Changho in LG Cup final.
