13th Samsung – 1st round – Japan
3 September 13th edition of Samsung Cup has started. This year we will see 14 Korean players, 15 Chinese player and only 3 from Japan. Samsung is championship sponsored by Korean company, but thanks to great China result in preliminary this year are more Chinese player in main tournament than Korean. Today I will write only 3 matches with Japanse player but before that, here are two videos from samsung opening ceremony.
Even If you don’t understand Korean, it is very interesting to watch this videos. But backing to main topic Japan team done great job in this round, because of 3 player 2 win their games. First game the biggest surprise made Yamashita Keigo 9p who beat Xie He 7p by resignation. Xie He few days ago lost to Piao Wenyao in Semifinal of World Oza Cup and I was sure that he will want to show his fans good baduk in Samsung Cup.
Unfortunately he fight in to many places. IMHO this kind of style don’t suit him very much. The key point of this fight was exchange in bottom side. Yamashita Keigo rescue some stones but his territory was turned into Xie He territory. The exchange looks even but Yamashita got a move to play shimari in upper left corner. After that the game was very hard for Xie He
In next game between Kobayashi Koichi 9p and Zhang Li 2p i was shocked of Kobayashi style! I never been studying hs game very careful, but from famous kobayshi fuseki, which is perfect example of active play, I was sur taht he play also that way. I was in big shock by seeing territorial oriented baduk. On other hand Zhang Li show very creative style, so after midlle game I was sure that he will win this game. My guess was right because after 237 moves Zhang LI won by 2,5 point.
In last game with Japanese player between Takao Shinji 9p and Rui Naiwei 9p goes without any surprise. Rui Naiwei play typical for her aggressive opening. In Middle game Takao Shinji show solid strength. The most interesting thing of this game for me was how easily Takao Shinji made sabaki in bottom side. I was expecting more from Rui Naiwei. In past some people said that she is unpredictable, so she can ever break Lee Changho plans. In the end Rui Naiwei resigned after 220 moves, because she couldn’t afford to give white komi and win the game.
After 1 round 2/3 players from Japan advance to second round, which will be played after one day break. Great succeed for Japan!
