Gu Li won LG Cup
23, 25 February Gu Li 9p play with Lee Sedol 9p in best-of-3 series final of LG Cup. Gu Li won both games and retake LG Cup after 3 years. LG Cup was his first major international title (in 2006) so this for sure bring up good memories.
First game was very entertaining. After white 42 I was sure that this game won’t end without big fight. First fight was started by Gu Li with black 51, but after white 82 white get nice moyo on left side. I don’t understand white 88, which produce more and more complications. In close combat fight Gu Li show few nice skillful moves like black 101.
The most important part of the game started after white 138. Gu Li needed to kill wite group in bottom side to win the game. Unexpectedly Lee Sedol made mistake with 144 and give Gu Li chance to kill the group without any problems. After game analyse show that white could make ko fight, so unconditional kill was big present for Gu Li. After 163 moves Lee Sedol resigned.
In second game Lee Sedol took black stones and play very good opening. It’s very rare to see Lee Sedol to build huge moyo in center with Takemiya Style. Unfortunately in the end instead of securing territory in center he tired to kill big white dragon. It’s very hard to kill this huge dragon, especially when you want to kill Gu Li :) With white 158 Gu Li make second eye for his group. Few moves later Lee Sedol resigned. It was pity to see Lee Sedol good games, which he lost because of mistakes in close combat fights.
