Kang Dongyun – new Chunwon
6 February, Kang Dongyun 9p beat Lee Sedol 9p in 5th and last game of Chunwon final. In last 2 months situation was really bad. Kang Dangyun lost huge number of game to Lee Sedol, lost chance to be Myeongin and was in situation when only one win for Lee Sedol would give him Chunwon title. Before last two games he also lost to Lee Changho 9p in KBS Cup so prognoses weren’t so good for him, but he did it. From now he beat both Lee Changho and Lee Sedol in important finals and become (for now) number 3 in Korea.
Lee Sedol took black stones and play 4 star points in opening. Very rare. Up to white 30 game goes very smoothly, but then Lee Sedol play interesting play with 31. This move IMO is not the best, situation become very hard for black. After white 50 black had weak group and his moyo in center become smaller.
Following fight was pretty complicated, but black 109 looks for me very bad. Why this stone are so important? I think black should expand his moyo or play on bottom side. Maybe probing move in corner? After white 118 corner is secure and IMO black advantage of first move disappear, but black continued to play sharp moves like white 144 and 164. After 214 moves Kang Dongyun won by resignation.
Kang Dongyun last year beat Lee Changho in final best-of-3, today he beat Lee Sedol in final best-of-5 what next? Only international title. Thanks to Chunwon title he will be automated seeded to international tournaments, so he will for sure will play many international games.
